The Classic Filipino Card Game — Now Online
Tongits is a three-player card game that originated right here in the Philippines, particularly popular in Luzon. It uses a standard 52-card deck and combines elements of rummy-style melding with the strategic tension of knowing when to fold, call, or push for a Tongits — the ultimate winning move where you empty your hand completely.
What makes Tongits so addictive is the balance between luck and skill. You can have a good starting hand and still lose if you misread your opponents. Conversely, a rough deal can turn around fast if you play your draws right and time your calls well. That psychological edge — watching what others discard, holding back, or forcing a fight — is what keeps players coming back for more.
At Aiorn Play, we've brought the same authentic Tongits experience you know from family gatherings and neighbourhood games, only now you can play with real stakes against opponents from all over the Philippines. The mechanics are true to the original, and the interface is clean and easy to use whether you're on mobile or desktop.
New to the game? Don't worry. Aiorn Play offers free practice tables where you can get the hang of the rules before playing for real money. We want every player to feel confident at the table, not rushed into betting before they're ready.
Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned player, here's how a game of Tongits works step by step.
Each of the three players is dealt 12 cards. The remaining cards form the stock pile at the centre of the table. The dealer gets 13 cards and discards one to start the discard pile.
On your turn, draw from the stock or pick up the last discarded card. Then discard one card from your hand. Keep doing this while building sets (three of a kind) and sequences (three or more consecutive same-suit cards).
Place valid sets or sequences face-up on the table. Melded cards are no longer in your hand, lowering your total point value and moving you closer to winning.
Any player can call a "Fight" (Sagot) if they believe they have the lowest remaining hand value. Everyone reveals their cards and the player with the lowest count wins — unless someone has a Tongits.
If you manage to discard or meld all your cards, you call Tongits and win automatically — no fight needed. It's the cleanest win in the game and instantly ends the round.
If the stock pile runs out before anyone calls Tongits or Fight, the round ends automatically and the player with the lowest hand value wins. Keeping your count low at all times matters.
Know your wins and play smarter every round.
Empty hand – automatic win, highest payout
Lowest hand value at showdown wins
Three cards of the same rank – valid meld
3+ consecutive same-suit cards – valid meld
Add a card to an existing meld on the table
Win by having the lowest count when the deck runs out
Playing Tongits well goes beyond just knowing the rules. Here are some practical tips that experienced Filipino players swear by.
Pay close attention to the discard pile. If a card you need has already been thrown out multiple times, it's probably not worth waiting for it. Adapt your meld targets early.
Don't hold onto sets trying to build the perfect hand. Getting cards off your hand early keeps your count low and gives you more flexibility in the endgame.
Calling a Fight too early can backfire if your opponents have already melded most of their cards. Wait until you're confident your remaining hand value beats theirs.
Face cards and tens carry heavy point values. Either meld them quickly or dump them early. Holding onto high cards that don't form part of any set is a common beginner mistake.

Tongits is believed to have been introduced to the Philippines from Taiwan in the late 1980s and quickly spread throughout Luzon before becoming a nationwide pastime. Today it's just as common on a smartphone screen as it is on a folding table in the barangay. At Aiorn Play, we honour that tradition by keeping the rules authentic and the gameplay smooth.
